Distinguished and Famous people from The Border Rivers Region
The Border Rivers region crosses the state boundary and includes upper-catchment centres such as Tenterfield and Glen Innes. Two creative careers that began in those towns reached very different national stages: popular music and public architecture.
๐ต Peter Allen
Peter Allen was born Peter Allen Woolnough in Tenterfield in 1944. As a teenager he joined Chris Bell in the Allen Brothers, beginning a performing career that later took him into international cabaret and songwriting. His enduring songs include I Go to Rio and I Still Call Australia Home. He also co-wrote I Honestly Love You and the Oscar-winning Arthur's Theme. His birthplace is the precise local connection: an entertainer whose work travelled widely began life in one of the Border Rivers' upper-catchment towns.
๐๏ธ Colin Madigan
Colin Madigan began assisting his architect father in Glen Innes at fourteen. By seventeen he was earning a living making architectural perspective drawings in Sydney. His studies were interrupted by wartime naval service, during which he survived the sinking of HMAS Armidale. Later, his firm was appointed to design the National Gallery of Australia and High Court buildings in Canberra. He received the Australian Institute of Architects' Gold Medal in 1981. The scale changed considerably, but the early connection is specific: practical architectural work in a Glen Innes office.
